Hace varias semanas no se está recolectando toda la basura, algunos piensan que el camión directamente no está pasando, o que a veces sí y a veces no, y todo esto genera mucha confusión. Desde Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper queremos brindarles información para aclarar sus dudas y conseguir todos juntos, de una vez por todas, limpiar nuestras costas y lograr tener nuestras calles libres de bolsas de basura.

Con respecto a la basura

La basura es todo lo que NO se recicla o se composta. En el distrito de Cóbano no se reciclan los materiales que estén sucios. Por ejemplo, una bandeja de plástico llena de aceite, una lata con restos de atún o servilletas usadas. Esta basura se tira en el contenedor que tenemos más cerca los domingos y jueves por la noche. Actualmente, el botadero que existía en Cóbano está oficialmente cerrado y toda la basura que generamos en el pueblo se lleva provisionalmente a Miramar, donde hay un relleno sanitario autorizado, que queda a cuatro horas de Cóbano. Hasta junio de este año, la Municipalidad de Cóbano se encargaba de hacer la recolección y luego, en el antiguo botadero, se transfería la basura a la empresa Tecno Ambiente, quien estaba contratada por la Municipalidad para llevar nuestra basura hasta Miramar. El contrato con Tecno Ambiente expiró en junio, así que ahora es la Municipalidad que tiene que encargarse tanto de la recolección como del transporte hasta Miramar. Por esta razón, los recursos que la Municipalidad tiene a disposición (camiones, personal y presupuesto) no son suficientes para pasar con la constancia en que pasaba anteriormente. Pese a que la Municipalidad compró un camión nuevo, los camiones no tienen la capacidad suficiente para hacer un solo recorrido por todo el distrito, teniendo que dejar basura en la calle sin poder recogerla. Las comunidades que utilizaban servicios de recolección privados (por no tener recolección municipal), también sienten las consecuencias del cierre definitivo del botadero pues, como ya no hay posibilidad de hacer la transferencia de basura a Tecno Ambiente, ellos también tienen que encargarse de la recolección y de transportarla a Miramar. Esto evidentemente eleva el costo de este servicio. Hay que tener en cuenta que, tanto la disponibilidad de espacio en el camión como el costo, están directamente relacionados con el peso y volumen de las bolsas de basura que transporta. Es decir, más pesan esas bolsas que usted deja para que el camión recolecte, menos espacio habrá en el camión para poder recoger más cantidad y más dinero le cuesta a la Municipalidad (o a usted, en el caso de los que usan servicios privados) llevárselas hasta Miramar. El mensaje aquí es que si reducimos la cantidad de basura que generamos (reciclando y composteando) el volumen y el peso a ser recolectado y transportado se reducirá considerablemente y nos ahorraríamos mucho dinero.

La solución la tiene que brindar la propia municipalidad porque por ley están obligados a garantizar un sistema adecuado de recolección y disposición, incluyendo además un sistema de reciclaje, ya sea a través de ellos o en asociación con organizaciones o empresas privadas. Desde Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper, le pedimos formalmente a la Municipalidad trabajar en planes de solución a corto, mediano y largo plazo; pero por el momento no estamos recibiendo ninguna respuesta fructífera. Están trabajando para licitar el servicio de recolección y de transporte hasta un relleno sanitario autorizado. Esperamos pronto tener noticias sobre esto.

Con respecto a los reciclables

Los materiales reciclables aquí en la zona son: vidrio, botellas plásticas y galones, tetrabrik, latas de aluminio y hojalata. Todo limpio, separado y seco. Estos materiales los recibimos todos los primeros jueves de cada mes enfrente de la plaza de deportes de 9am a 4pm, en nuestra campaña de reciclaje. Por ahora, cartón y papel no tenemos cómo reciclarlo y desde nuestra organización estamos abiertos a cualquier persona que realice esta actividad para que se sume a reciclar este material. Con respecto a los residuos orgánicos, siempre recomendamos el Compost Club promovido por Nahuel de Casa Pampa para revalorizar este material composteando.

Buenas nuevas desde Nicoya Waterkeeper

Nos alegra mucho anunciarles que estamos a un par de meses de abrir nuestro propio centro de acopio para materiales reciclables en Cóbano. Gracias al apoyo de una de la empresa sponsor Bionic y a los Ingalls por cedernos parte de su terreno para construir el centro, vamos a poder tener un centro autorizado en donde recibir los reciclables. Esto es un gran avance para la comunidad ya que se facilitará la recolección y, si cada quien separa su basura o reciclables en sus casas o comercios, podremos reducir hasta un 65% de la basura. Esperamos poder anunciar la fecha exacta de apertura pronto y que, con el trabajo de toda la comunidad, juntos podamos lograr un ambiente más limpio y sano.

What’s going on with the trash?

Several weeks ago, the garbage truck stopped collecting all the trash, some of you may think that the truck is not coming to town, or that it just comes sometimes, and all this issue is creating a lot of confusion. Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper wants to bring you information so you know what’s going on and, once and for all, we will be able -all together-, to clean our streets and our coasts from trash.

Regarding Trash

By trash we mean everything that is not recyclable or compostable. In the Cobano district, we do not recycle the materials that are dirty. For instance, a plastic tray full of oil, a can with tuna leftovers, or used napkins. This type of trash must be thrown away in the closest container every Sunday or Thursday night. Currently, the dump that existed in Cobano is officially closed and all the trash this town generates is carried to an authorized landfill in Miramar, four hours away from here. Until June 2018, the Municipality of Cobano was in-charge of the garbage collection and then, in the former dump, they transferred the trash to a company called Tecno Ambiente, who had been hired by the Municipality to take our trash to Miramar. The contract with Tecno Ambiente expired in June, so now the Municipality must take over the collection AND transportation of the trash all the way to Miramar. For this reason, their available resources (trucks, staff and budget) are not enough to cover the whole area with the same regularity as before. Eventhough they bought a new truck, they do not have enough capacity to collect and transport the garbage of the whole District, which forces them to leave trash behind in the streets. The communities that don’t have Municipal trash collection and use private collection services are also feeling the consequences of the dump’s closing as they must collect AND transport the trash to Miramar as well.

This evidently increases the cost of the services. We must consider that the availability of the space in the truck and its cost, are directly related to the weight and volume of the collected trash bags. That is to say, the more those trash bags weight and the more space they occupy inside the truck, there will be less space in the truck to collect more quantity of bags. This means more routes uncovered and higher costs for the Municipality to take it to Miramar (or for you, in case you use private collection services). The message here is that, if we reduce the amount of trash we generate (by recycling and composting) the volume and weight to be collected will decrease considerably and we will save a lot of money.

The Municipality must offer a real solution because they are bound by the law to guarantee an appropriate collection and disposition system, including a recycling system, directly or through a private organization or company. Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper has formally asked the Municipality to work on short, medium and long-term plans to solve these problems. For the moment, we have not received any answer. They are working on launching a public bid for a company to take over the collection and transportation of the trash. We hope to have news on this soon.

Regarding recyclable materials

The recyclable materials we work with here are: glass, plastic bottles and gallons, tetrabrik, aluminum cans and tin. Everything clean, sorted and dry. We receive these materials every first Thursday of the month in front of the Santa Teresa soccer field from 9am until 4pm, in our Recycling Campaign. For now, we are not recycling cardboard and paper, but we are open to ideas on how to do it. Regarding organic waste, we always recommend the Compost Club promoted by Nahuel from Casa Pampa.

Good news from Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper

We are thrilled to announce that in a couple of months we will be opening our own recyclable collection center in Cobano. Thanks to the support of one of our allies, material engineering company Bionic, and to the Ingalls’ for leeting us build the center in their land, we are going to have an authorized collection center to receive the recyclables materials. This is a big step for the community and the whole District!  This will make the collection easier. If all of us separate our own trash and recyclables at home and businesses, we will be able to reduce trash in a 65%. We hope to announce the exact date of the big opening very soon and that, with the work of the whole community, together we will be able to create a cleaner and healthier environment.
